Storm causes massive damage to banana, mango trees in Lumbini
By Siraj Khan Nepalgunj: Banana and mango trees have been severely damaged by a strong wind that hit Banke and Bardiya districts of Lumbini Province Saturday evening.
According to the Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Nepalgunj, bananas and mangoes grown in both the districts have been severely damaged by the strong wind.
The wind caused damages to banana farms in Gulariya of Bardiya district and Kohalpur of Banke district.
Sagar Dhakal, chief of the Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Nepalgunj, said that more than 16,000 banana trees were destroyed in the two the districts.
He said that more than half of the banana trees planted in 10 bighas of land in Banke and Bardiya were destroyed by the wind, causing damages worth Rs. 2 million.
Chief of the Nepal Agriculture Development Farm Debendra Adhikari said that 12,000 banana trees were destroyed in Bardiya and 4,000 in Banke.
He said that the same kind of damage was caused by a wind last year as well.
He said that his hope to earn a good income this year and recover the losses incurred last year was dashed this year too.
Stating that the bananas planted in 10 bighas of land were yielding and the fruit would be ready for sale in three months, Adhikari said that more than half of the banana trees grown investing Rs. 3 million were damaged.
Similarly, a large number of ripe mangoes in Banke and Bardiya districts were damaged by the storm, according to the Centre.
Stating that the work to collect the details of the damages caused to fruit has started, Dhakal said that the exact details of the damages would be received in a few days.The Rising Nepal
