COVID-19 Latest updates: Over 20,000 active cases in India, death toll rises to 652

According to the latest data released by the Union Ministry of Health, the total COVID-19 cases in India has crossed the 20,000-mark with current numbers at 20,471 while 3906 have been cured of the virus.

63-year old man trampled to death by a wild elephant in Alipurduar

Alipurduar, 22nd April: A wild elephant from the Bhutri Forest of Buxa Tiger Reserve under Kalchini block claimed the life of a 63-year-old man named Budhuya Munda, a resident of Central Dooars Tea garden in Kalchini block.

As per the report, the incident took place when the elderly man went inside the jungle to collect fuelwood. The forest department officials, upon sighting the dead body reported the incident to the Kalchini police, who reached the spot shortly after and recovered the body.

Dowry death: Malda woman allegedly killed for dowry

Malda, 22d April: Husband and in-laws have been accused of choking a woman to death in the Gobra Mistry Para area of Daulat Nagar Gram Panchayat under Malda Harischandrapur Police station. The deceased has been identified as Sona Mandal (25).

Currently, the three accused Subir Mandal (husband), Aloka Mandal (mother-in-law), and Tinku Mandal (brother-in-law) have been arrested by the police. However, the other two accused Ramesh Mandal and Anima Mandal are absconding.

The deceased’s family members alleged that Sona’s in-laws used to constantly harass her for dowry ever since her marriage. They further alleged that, on Tuesday, her in-laws choked her to death and then hung her body to a noose. The in-laws informed them regarding the incident the next morning. When they reached the spot, Sona’s lifeless body was hanging from a noose.

On the other hand, the deceased’s husband Subir Mandal denied all the allegations and further claimed that he was not at home when his wife committed suicide.

The police recovered the body, sent it for an autopsy, and are currently investigating the incident.siliguritimes/from, india
