Malda woman jumps in front of a train with baby in her arms

Malda, 24th April: A woman threw herself in front of a train with her 19-month-old baby in her arms on Friday morning in the English Bazar police station area of Malda. The 21-year-old mother, Liza Bibi, and her son Rizwan Sheikh were residents of Islampur Sonatala village under Jadupur No. 1 Gram Panchayat.

According to sources, Liza was having a dispute with her husband Nasir Sheikh who was allegedly harassing her for a dowry of 1 lakh rupees.

The English Bazar Police recovered Liza and her son’s bodies and sent it for an autopsy. While the accused husband has been absconding ever since the incident, the police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

CM Banerjee and Governor Dhankhar exchange war of words over COVID-19 crisis in Bengal

Two Central Government teams visited hospitals and quarantine centers set up in Bengal. The state recorded 58 new cases on Thursday.

Later in the afternoon, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to Raj Bhawan.

“You appear to have forgotten that I am an elected Chief Minister of a proud Indian state. You also seem to have forgotten that you are a nominated Governor,” she wrote. In her letter, she further added that Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar’s “tone , tenor and language, which in the mildest words of extreme moderation, deserve to be characterised as unparliamentary”.

The letter came after the Governor accused the state government of mismanaging the COVID-19 crisis in Bengal. He had also alleged a scam in the public distribution system and said it had been hijacked by leaders from the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Tourism Minister Goutam Deb distributed ration among the needy in SMC’s Ward No. 46 amid lockdown

Siliguri, 24th April: In light of the COVID-19 lockdown, the Ward No. 46 Trinamool Congress distributed ration among the needy in Siliguri Samar Nagar area.

The State Tourism Minister Goutam Deb handed over the food items to the poor people.

Ward TMC leader MD Hujur, Mallika Debnath, Chayan Mohanto, Basu Saha, Mangal Pal, Ujjwal Sarkar, Pran Chakraborty, and many other dignitaries were present during the programme.
