By Mahima Devkota, Kathmandu, Nov.10: A total of 1,327 registered Nepali doctors have taken the good standing certificate (GSC) to go abroad in the year 2021.
As per the report of Nepal Council (NMC), as many as 1,502 registered doctors of Nepal took the good standing certificate of which, only 10.45 per cent that is, 175 took the good standing certificate for Nepal while the rest 89.55 per cent aimed to go abroad either to work or study with the good standing certificate.
The good standing letter is taken by the registered doctors either for getting a promotion in government jobs or to get affiliated to another council for study or to work.
According to Krishna Adhikari, registrar of the Nepal Medical Council (NMC), every year many registered doctors take the GSC to work or to study abroad. More than 26 per cent, that is, 403, of the GSC aimed to go to Maldives, followed by, 21 per cent to go to the UK, 18 per cent to go to the United States, 10 per cent to go to India and 4 per cent to go to Australia.
He said that every year, a large chunk of registered Nepali doctors go abroad for better opportunities and it is an increasing trend. In the year, 2020, 1,087 registered doctors took the GSC, which, is, 72 per cent less in comparison to the year 2021.
Dr Badri Rijal, general secretary of the Nepal Medical Association (NMA), the number of registered doctors going abroad have increased tremendously in Nepal. It is because Nepal lacks well-equipped hospitals, a handsome pay for doctors.
UK, USA, Maldives, India, Australia, UAE, Canada, Qatar, Germany, Singapore, Ireland, Saudi, Brunei, Denmark, Hong Kong, Belgium, Bangladesh, Belarus, China, Egypt, Georgia, Guyana, Hungary, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea (S), Kyrgyzstan, Mauritius, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Ukraine and Thailand are the countries which are the choice of the Nepali doctors to work or to study.
