Learning became easy, fun and exciting through EGRP

Bagehini MV is located on the east hill of Bhaktapur district. This school is one of the 13 schools under Shree Krishna Resource center. Bagehini MV is situated in the middle of a village called Kharipati. The main occupation of the people living here is seasonal farming. Bagehini MV covers almost 90% of the children living in this area. Bagehini MV has around 120 Early Grade Reading students and among them hardly 20% can read out all the nepali alphabetical letters clearly. The children were never seem intersted in reading . Even in school they said, “reading is a really boring thing to do, we are forced to do whatever the teachers want us to do and we do not like doing it.” Also most of these children parents are illetratre because of which they are not been supervised on their study at home. As a result the huge percent of EGR students are unable to even read out the alphabetical letters. All of this infromation were shared by one of the active community member of that community to our Community Mobilization Officer.

On November 2016, Community Mobilization Officer Mr. Rudramani Dhungana along with EGRP team visited the school and gave a brief introduction of Early Grade Reading Program to the school team. After few days of that in coordination with the school and the surrounding community, two tole reading groups were formed under Bagehini school and the formation process was facilitated by the Community Mobilization Officer Mr. Dhungana. This TRG were formed with a believe of helping EGR students in reading and knowing letters. During the formation the two TRG group were named as Bagehini TRG  and Community Learning Center TRG. Ms. Sarda Fuyal and Ms. Archana Adhikari were selected as the coordinators of the TRG groups respectively by the community themselves. One of this two groups was formed as a subcommittee under Community Learning Center of that village and was named after it. This TRG groups were oriented on Early Grade Reading Program and were clearly informed about the activities they should be involved in. They were requested to organize a monthly meeting among their TRG members and create a platform where EGR students can visit on weekends and read books provided by EGRP. After certain period of time they were also given training to prepare locally reading materials. They enjoyed taking this training and implied later on their TRG and community. Those locally developed reading materials were meant to be used by the EGR students on weekends and holidays.

On the recent visit to the TRG, Coordinator of Community Learning Center TRG Ms. Archana Adhikari says, “  We have provided a little space in our homes where EGR students visit on weekend, and after schools we have found the children involving for reading in their holidays too. They are so excited to read the books provided by EGRP project. The students have maintained their reading habits at home and child club.” She further added, “The teachers also recommended EGRP project as effective project as the students were sharing more interest in studying books provided by EGRP project .To sum up, EGRP project has not only contributes in reading and learning but it has also helped in skill development and creativity of the children. Students are now able to identify the words and can read the sentences properly. This project also enhanced  schools ability to provide quality education services for all students.”

Also one of the parents of the EGR student of Bagehini MV Ms. Rammaya Tamang says, “ before, we could not know weather our children were studying or just looking at book covers, they used to tell they were reading and we believed but now with the new concept of reading out loud that we came to know with the help of EGRP has helped us at least make our children read out loud which assure us that they are reading and also we can correct them in their mistakes while listening even though we can not read ourselves and help them. And the good part about it is we can listen to them while getting involved in our daily chores.”
