
By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Aug. 20: Minister for Information and Communication Dr. Bikram Timilsina has directed line agencies to make newspaper classification and distribution of public welfare advertisement transparent, efficient and effective.
At a discussion with the Department of Information and Broadcasting (DOIB) and the Press Council Nepal today, issues dwelt on were: newspapers of a single owner or company taking multiple welfare ads, hyping number of papers published while presenting records, difference in details of number of papers published and actually published number and lack of clarity in criteria for classification.
Chief of the concerned division of the ministry, acting director general of the DOIB, Anup Nepal, chief officer of the Press Council Nepal Jhabindra Bhusal and senior administrative officer of the Press Council Nepal Deepak Khanal, among others, participated in the discussion, according to the secretariat of Minister Dr. Timilsina.
On newspaper classification, the officials said that self-declaration of media house and details of the audit report are considered to figure out actual number of publishing or circulation of a newspaper.
At the conclusion of the discussion, Minister Dr. Timilsina instructed to formulate effective system to determine actual number of publishing and distribution of newspaper, make clear the basis of classification and make distribution of public welfare ads transparent and justifiable.
