Interventions to reduce gender-based violence

Mechinagar. An interaction on the role of the media sector in reducing gender-based violence was held at Birtamod on Saturday, organized by the Jhapa Women’s Department of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists.The participants of the interaction emphasized that the media sector should become more responsible in reducing gender violence.

They pointed out that the role of the media sector is important for reducing gender violence, and for this, cooperation among all stakeholders is also necessary. They insisted on giving justice to the victims of violence and bringing the perpetrators to justice.The interaction was inaugurated by the chief guest, Chief District Officer of Jhapa, Shivram Pokharel. Prazia Pokharel said that discrimination is the main cause of violence and said that it is necessary to change people’s thinking and behavior. He said that the stakeholders should unite and carry out an awareness campaign in the society.

The analytical data of the situation of sexual violence in Jhapa was presented by Mahendra Parajuli, Inspector of Police, District Police Office, Jhapa. He said that when the victim does not tell the truth, when the complaint is withdrawn, when the statement is contradicted, when the evidence is destroyed in the name of consent, when various activities are done to protect the perpetrator, it is a problem for the victim to get justice.

As part of the 16-day campaign against gender violence, the Women’s Department of Jhapa Federation of Journalists organized an interaction with the slogan ‘Ensuring End of Gender Violence: Solidarity of Investing in Women and Children’. In the interaction, there was significant participation of stakeholders and media persons from various fields.
